In the one-page article, Dana showed that there are couples who were successfully and happily divorced.

The couples presented including Demi Moore and Bruce Willis and other well known celebrities.

Although Happy Divorce is much more preferable compared to bitter divorce, but divorce is still divorce and it is not recommended by God.

The article quoted a comment by Andrew Cherlin, a professor at Johns Hopkins, that there will be a possible rise in happy divorces. Why? he explained, where 50 years ago, divorce was so stigmatized only the most miserable left their marriages, now the "moderately unhappy" are getting out too, which might make for some less acrimonious splits.

I do not know whether I want to laugh and cry reading the possibility presented. For me, it presented two serious problems:
1. People are no longer serious in the marriage constitution, they can get divorce even if they are "moderately" unhappy.
2. When people who are "moderately unhappy" become "happily divorced", the family and friends are relieved.

Why go to marriage if you make allowance for divorce even when you are only moderately unhappy? (I am not suggesting that when we are seriously unhappy then it is OK to divorce).
Why must we be happy or relieved, when a happy divorce occured? a divorce is a divorce, what God has united, no man should separate.

As a Pastor, I seriously consider the happy-divorce trend is simply sugar-coating something that is abhored by God. When it is sin, it is still sin, no matter how good you make it to be.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com43tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38414623.post-62783417576325782222011-12-24T10:01:00.001+08:002011-12-24T10:01:27.939+08:00Reflection of 2011Reflection of 2011

Serving the Lord is never an easy task. And it is more so in the capacity of a church pastor.

In good moments, I can see far ahead and envision what the church can become when all the potentials are properly developed and utilized in place.

In sad moments, I sat back and wonder what went wrong. Why are there so many negative voices whispering behind my back. I know that I have many weaknesses and there are things that I could have done better, but I would appreciate a direct feedback if the person genuinely wants the ministry of the church to improve.

No feedback = No communication = my presence in the church is not needed.

But the Lord is good. He kept reminding me of the purpose of my calling. He reminded me that my purpose here is to build up and strengthen the church. He convicted me that all good works must start with the Word ministry and that is where I have embarked on in 2011.

The pulpit ministry is no longer a haphazard compilation of sermons that is controlled by the multitude of speakers invited by the church. The cell group is restructured so that the entire church can progress through same materials. The pastor’s note and the bulletin have continued to be a channel of communication to the congregation.

Some people may find the pulpit ministry, the pastor’s note and the cell group materials to be simplistic. I remember some scholar who was proud in delivering messages that no one understood, and for that he was proud. It proves that he is not shallow and above all his listeners. My goal is not to be like him, but to be like a Preacher who preached simplistic message to a crowd of listeners years ago, so that all may understand regardless of their education level.

Yes, my goal for 2012 is to be a simple preacher, teacher, pastor and friend. I will continue to serve where my service is felt needed. I will teach those who are willing to be taught. I will preach to those who are willing to listen.

May God who has guided me in 2011 continue to lead His church in 2012Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38414623.post-6904652215478120702011-05-28T11:13:00.002+08:002011-05-28T11:41:48.875+08:00Reflection on Tourism in IndonesiaIndonesia is a big country, rich in natural resources, cultures, and natural wonders.

in one of the slogan seen in Singapore public buses, it is written there that Indonesia has the most varied destinations. The question is, why tourism in Indonesia seems to be confined to Bali and maybe surrounding areas and not to the rest of the region?

My recent trip to Korea taught me a lesson. In order for a place or a country to attract tourist, it takes much more than having the object of attraction, be it an ancient temple (e.g. Borobudur), mountains, lakes with wonderful scenery. All these are essential, but countries without them can fabricate object attraction out of nothing (casino, fake mountain, fake folklore, fake stories) to make the place interesting.

Apart from the objects of attraction, there are other elements required to encourage local tourism:
1. availability of materials/brochures in language understood by tourists (English, Indonesian, Chinese?)
2. availability of clean public toilets
3. accessibility to the places
4. last but not least, security

Indonesia Tourism Board, if there is such a board, should look carefully into those areas if they really want to attract foreign dollars into Indonesia. Indonesia as a whole, need to pump in money into this field, if they want serious income in this area.

Korea, suffered a lot, as many other countries did during the 1998 monetary crisis. While all ministers have nothing to offer, the tourism minister took up the challenge, build up sites, promote korean dramas and movies, in order to attract tourists to come to Korea. And it was a major success!

Can Indonesia do that too?

When I return to my hometown a few years ago, I visited the palace and the tomb of the late King of the Riau Malay Kingdom. There is nothing there except for an oldman smoking in a corner. There are more people coming to Tanjung Pinang for the Vices.

Tourism is a serious business and can offer serious income to Indonesia. With Singapore as a hub, surely Indonesia can think of something to do to attract a fraction of tourists visiting Singapore.

Or even if Indonesia choose not to rely on foreign tourists, the economy can still be greatly increased if local tourism is encouraged. China rely a lot on local tourism as well for their economy. But even if you want to do that, accessibility, security and other conveniences have to be taken care of.

As an Indonesian for the first 30 years of my life, I have to confess, apart from visiting Batam, and other places with escorts of local friends, it has never occurred in my mind to visit places for pure tourism purpose. Why? because of perceived fear, for Indonesia is still regarded as a place not safe for 'outsiders'.

Indonesia has a lot to offer, there are many who wants to take the offer, can the authorities help to establish the link between the two is the key to success.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38414623.post-21765245653152318002011-05-28T11:06:00.001+08:002011-05-28T11:06:32.264+08:00Give Thanks or ComplainsGive Thanks

In one of the advertisement for the TV Show – We Are Singaporean, the host Hossan Leong candidly pointed out, and “double-confirmed” that what most Singaporeans like to do during their spare time is to “complain”

While it is difficult to prove how prevalence is this “complaining” tendencies among Singaporeans, the opposite attitude can be observed: Do we often see people giving thanks for the things that are happening around us? Sometimes, but probably not as many times as we would like to see.

Complaining seems to be part of the human nature, because it is so easy to find negative things to say about anything: the weather is too hot, too wet, too dry; the food is too bland, too salty, too expensive; the park is too quiet, too noisy, too dirty; the mall is too far, too crowded, too small, etc. By being negative, it will be hard for us to give thanks and look at the bright side of this blessed life.

Sometimes we refused to give thanks even when things are going in our favor:
My wife was going for lunch with her colleagues. The sky was dark and the rain seemed ominous, but the rain did not happen until they reached the food court. It would be difficult for a group of 7 to find a seat in the food court during lunch hour, but when they arrived, a big table was cleared to accommodate them. The best part is that when they finished their lunch, and were going to walk back to the office, the rain stopped. Others may take it for granted but she gave thanks to God for these little things.

Coincidences? Maybe. Trivial? Maybe. The thing is this: Paul in 1Thess 5:18 says: “give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.” If we were to give thanks only when God split the Red Sea in our lives, chances are we will never give thanks to Him.

Brothers and Sisters in Christ, if life is difficult and full of stress and challenges, why embitter it with more complaints which do us no good and will only make others unhappy? Why not season your life with more thanksgiving and spread the smiles and love and hope to those around us?

If you have to complain, remember this: The Bible records 75 occurrences of thanksgiving and 25 occurrences of complaints. Before you complaint about anything or anyone, think about three good things to give thanks about. May God bless you.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38414623.post-4892029370491412192011-04-10T07:11:00.000+08:002011-04-10T07:14:43.907+08:00Let’s Move On …Let’s Move On …

There is a time for everything, the Teacher in Ecclesiastes 3 says, and by ‘everything’ I believe that there is a time to ‘stay on’ and ‘move on’ also.

Some of us like to stay in status quo, but others may feel the need to change. That’s why we move from house to house, from job to job, and maybe even from relationship to relationship to find one that is better or suit us best.

There is definitely a virtue in “staying” and be contented with what we have, but sometimes we really need to “move on”. When do we need to move on?

There was a Catholic priest who was with his apprentice. As they were about to wade across a river, there was a young lady who wants to cross the river also. The priest then offered to carry the lady across and the lady concurred. The apprentice was dumbfounded, for he was thought by the priest not to touch females. After they waded through the river, the priests and the lady went their separate ways. The young priest’s faced was sour, and after two hours walking, he finally blurted out. “why did you touch the young lady, and did not do as you preach?!” The old priest looked at him and said, ”brother, I have put her down two hours ago, why are you still holding on to her?”*

Brothers and sisters in Christ. All of us have done mistakes in the past. None of us are without fault. However, with regards to faults and mistakes, it is highly recommended that we should move on.

For us who committed the sins. Let us move on, and try to be a better person. Do not dwell and feel sorry about the mistakes done. What is done cannot be undone.

For us who witnessed the sins. Let us confront it and move on. Give the person a chance to move on too. What is the benefit of binding the person with the chains that Christ has already broken?

King David said in Psalms 51: “Against you only have I sinned” It is the Lord who is the offended party, not us. Why do we hold grudges over our erring brothers and sisters in Christ?

There is a time for everything, and now is time to move on, my friends.

*story adapted popular folkloreUnknownnoreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38414623.post-4546849647518771822011-04-05T14:58:00.001+08:002011-04-05T15:09:51.801+08:00How to Clean Leafy Greens - for my wifey
Green leafy vegetables such as kale, chard, collards and mustard greens are rich in vitamins C and A and also fiber and antioxidants. Hey… wait a minute, why is Pastor writing about Chinese Zodiac? Shouldn‟t we Christian leave all those behind?
Please do not get me wrong.

I do not believe in horoscope, whether it is western or eastern horoscope. To me, the Chinese zodiac system is just one way to calculate and compare how old or young we are. If you are using the zodiac in this manner, it is no problem at all. After all, Chinese zodiac is something very deeply rooted in our culture and community.

However, if you start to read those predictions about which zodiac will be better or worse off in the new Rabbit year; and/or what should you do in order to be better or to avoid some mishaps; what is your lucky number, lucky color, etc., then it is definitely a wrong thing to do.

As Christians, our source of blessing is God and our greatest gift is the life bought by the blood of Christ. Rather than putting our trusts in those far-fetched predictions of some unproven geomancer, we should put our trusts in God‟s word which grants us eternal life.
As we celebrate the Chinese New Year, others may wish us a new year full of good luck, prosperity and wealth. Let us wish them a blessed new year where they may be truly blessed by the only true God. Let us pray that we will be used as the instrument to tell them the good news – the Gospel of Life!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38414623.post-34030267576468607262011-04-03T01:40:00.000+08:002011-04-03T01:43:37.257+08:00Home Coming 2011What is home actually? Home is not simply a house where you can come in and rest from the day’s work. Home is not simply a shelter for you to hide from the storms of the world. Home is where your heart is.

I used to think that Home-Coming is a concept that is widely embraced by the Chinese or Asians only. That is why every year we see millions of Chinese nationals travels across thousands of miles in order to get back to their hometown. This year, it is expected that 700 million Chinese nationals will be travelling during this Spring Festival to get home for a moment of reunion with their family.

The concept of home during the Chinese New Year is truly felt during this period of time. The movie “HomeComing” tells about what it really means to go home, and one can expect a lot of laughter from that New Year Comedy.

But is homecoming is always about laughter? Or does 落叶归根simply means you got to go back and rest in peace at your birthplace? This short story below may help you to see things in the right perspective.

After serving for decades, a couple of old missionaries finally returned home. They were on board the same flight with a sport star who has just won a gold medal. While walking through the red carpet the sportsman received deafening applause. The old couple received none and was saddened. After years of laboring for the Lord, they were not even welcomed home. As they look up to the clear blue sky, their eyes were brighten. They smiled and realized the truth.

They were not home yet.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38414623.post-83302177893393144832011-04-03T01:39:00.001+08:002011-04-03T01:39:46.028+08:00Moving<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:worddocument> There are three things that we can do:
1. But God has another plan, that forced me to stay in my bed - by allowing me to contract the H1N1 swine flu virus.

Diagnosed with H1N1

It all began since Christmas event of the church, when I started to feel unwell. After the event, and the next day's Sunday Service, I started to have a high fever. It started with 37.7, and slowly climbed up to 38.3. The paracetamol helped to lower the temperature to slightly below 38, but it did not last long. On Monday, I went to my family doctor, and she prescribed me with standard flu medication.

Because the temperature persists, on Wednesday I returned to the clinic again. To my surprise, the doctor say, since the Christmas (3 days past) she got 4 patients with high fever above 38, and 3 of which were confirmed with H1N1. By her wisdom and experience, she did a swab test on me, and we will wait for the result in the next 24-48 hours.

On Thursday, my temperature started to drop and stabilized below 37 degree, which is pretty much normal. I happily get myself prepared for the ministry I am supposed to participate on 31st December and 2nd January. I mailed the church leaders to announce that I have no problem at all (it's the fourth days I took MC - and they are worried).

On Friday morning 10 am, I received a call from the family doctor, announcing that I am confirmed with H1N1 swine flu. I am required to go to the clinic immediately. I arrived there, and the doctor checked, and was surprised that I show no sign of fever or flu at all. I still have some cough and muscle pain, but it all seem manageable.

She did not prescribe me with any new medication, no tamiflu or what.. she just gave me another 3 days mc, for within this period I may still pass the virus to others. She said, I cannot go to the church for the watchnight service, or the Sunday service.

Blessing in Disguise

I was sad - am still sad - for missing the first service in the New Year of the church. And yet, as I ponder on the Scripture on which I am supposed to preach on, my eyes began to open and see.

I thank God!! for averting a disaster from happening to the church through me. I am supposed to be the channel of blessing to God, by preaching His message, but without His intervention, I may have brought a disaster to the church.

You see, if the doctor - who is a Christian also - did not do a test on me, and the result did not come back on Friday morning, all would think that I have recovered from my flu, and I would be in the Church for both the Watchnight Service as well as the New Year Sunday Service.

There will be tonnes of interactions with the old folks in the Chinese congregation, and mingling with the younger ones in the English congregation; Out of the 120 Chinese congregation, about half are well above 50. Should I pass the virus to these old folks, or the younger ones, I would not know what will happen. Perhaps I will never forgive myself if something bad really happen.

As such, I feel that I am truly blessed by God, for He has prevent such things from happening. I give thank to the Lord for this New Year present, for the H1N1, and especially for reminding me... when something bad happened to you.. it may not be really a bad thing... always look to the cross and God will give you the light to see His purpose in all that is happening around you..

God blessUnknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38414623.post-9010692828250017452010-11-25T10:53:00.014+08:002010-11-25T14:55:38.239+08:00The Christian, the MOE staff, and the McDonald's staffHow do people recognize your identity? Is it by your uniform, your name tag, or your behavior? Below are separate encounters that set me thinking, that as Christians, we need to do more if we want to let the world know about the love of Christ.

The Unexpected Gesture by a McDonald Staff

I was traveling by the MRT train to work as usual. Part of the journey would involve transferring at the ever-crowded Jurong East Interchange. Regardless of all the video clips on courtesy and all the PA announcing the need to allow people to come out first, people from all age range simply refused to heed the advice. People are so thick-skinned when they queue in front of you, or simply directly in front of the train door.

It was just my day, that I ended up in a cabin without working AC. The weather was hot, but inside the cabin, it was like Sauna. People started to complain, all are sweating because of the rising temperature, some are cursing the SMRT for taking the people's money but never do a proper job in maintaining the system.

When we reached the next stop, an elderly gentleman walked in aided by a walking stick. He moved rather slowly, but was graciously given a seat by a young lady who happened to sit on the priority seat. Priority seat is designated for the elderly, pregnant ladies, small children and those with handicapped. Despite the educational videos, many do not give up their seats to those rightful persons, and so the act done by this young lady is still plausible.

The gentleman sat down, and smiled to the passenger seated next to him. She smiled back. And so the journey continued on. I was standing right in front of them.

As the journey progresses, the gentleman started to sweat profusely due to the temperature. It was at this moment, that I saw an unexpected gesture of kindness displayed by the passenger seated next to him.

She opened up her briefcase, and took out a sheet of plastic file. And then she started to fan the elderly gentleman.

I was shocked. I never saw someone did something like that in my 15 years taking MRT in Singapore. Giving up seat is fine, passing up tissue paper is okay, but fanning a stranger who is sweating... I have to admit, that this thought never crossed my mind.

The gentleman appreciated the kindness of the young lady, and asked her to stop. Probably he was shy. After a while, the lady put back the file back in her briefcase.

I observed the lady carefully, and noticed there is a logo sewn at her collar. The world famous 'm' logo symbolizes the fastfood chain 'McDonald'. When I reached my station at Sembawang, the lady get off the train too, and I noticed that she works at the McDonald branch at Sun Plaza. I made a mental note to thank her and commend her for her acts.

The Unexpected Act by an MOE Staff

Littering and smoking are two 'minor' problems that are so prevalent in Singapore. You've seen littering everywhere. Rubbish on the floor, rubbish in the lift (including pee and saliva sometimes), rubbish in the bus (and saliva too, yuck!). Despite the fact that rubbish bin are everywhere, and as we would like to boast, most Singaporeans are 'educated'. But educated and learned are certainly two different things altogether.

As for smoking, despite the fact that the governments have passed on laws to curb down smoking in many places: lifts, public waiting area, tunnels, bus shelters, covered walkway, hawker center, but because most of the laws are for 'deterring' purpose, there are basically nothing we can do to stop people from smoking in the places that they should not.

Some of the smokers hid their cigarettes as they crossed the tunnel. But many simply could not care less about the no-smoking sign pasted on the wall. Some even forcefully took down the signage, and nothing is being done to replace. Some are with tattoos (makes you think twice if you want to stand up and talk to them).

Last week, as I was going for a conference, I walked towards the bus shelter just outside block 43 Commonwealth ave west. The time was almost 2 pm, after lunch hour. There were three benches along the bus shelter, which is used to serve public buses as well as shuttle buses to nearby MOE and Fusionopolis.

When I was approaching the bus shelter, at 30m away, I saw a solitary figure sitting at the bench closes to me, and he was smoking. The other two benches are full of people, apparently they were avoiding the smoke from this elderly gentleman. He was around the age of 50 years old, a bit fat, wearing a short sleeve-purple ironed shirt.

I noticed there was a name tag hanging directly on his chest. Curious, I walked closer, pretending that I was moving towards the other benches, but at the same time focusing my eyes on the name tag. I thought maybe he is a man with special need. Why else would you display such a tag, in such a prominent location?

I was wrong. The name tag says that it is by Ministry of Education. And nicely printed below was his name. Mr CKL. He is a staff with MOE but I could not be sure of his title or position.

As I was observing him, and pondering what should I do towards him, I started to take out my handphone. I thought, this would be a nice picture to send to STOMP. (An Officer of MOE Smoking at Public Bus Shelter, featuring the man - in mozaic - with the smoldering cigarettes).

However, when I looked at him again, split seconds later, his cigarette was no longer there. I looked around, and saw he threw the half-burned cigarette on the floor just behind his seat. The smoke was still rising, and it is apparent that he did not intend to put it off. It was infuriating, because the the nearest rubbish bin was just two meters away from his current position, and yet he did not even bother to bin it.

I looked at him, and looked at the cigarette on the floor, and because the way I do it was probably too obvious, he noticed. He turned back his head, and look at the cigarette that he just threw, then he looked at me. Fearing that I may take a picture of him (it did cross my mind), he stood up, and moved away to the first bench, without bothering to pick up or put off the cigarette that he threw away.

Shortly, a shuttle bus arrive at the bus shelter. This bus is designated to bring people back to the nearby MOE building after the lunch hour. This elderly gentleman boarded the bus and left me and the smoldering cigarette behind.

The Response of a Christian

As I meditate on these two encounters, I wonder: Have I live up to my identity as a Christian? Have I been a faithful pastor, not just for the sake of my congregation members who can see me, but also for others, and ultimately for God whom I cannot hide from?

The McDonald staff's identity is shown by her uniform. Because of her kind gesture, it makes me admire her personality, and perhaps think that that is the McDonald culture.

The MOE staff's identity is shown clearly by his name tag. His inconsiderate behavior in littering and smoking at the bus shelter sends a totally different message. If the people working in MOE, the ministry supposed to educate the future citizens of Singapore, are not obeying the law, then what for are we obeying the law. Of course, this is over-generalization and not true, because not all the staff are like that.

These two events set me thinking. If I am representing a group, organization or company, I need to behave according to the culture or philosophy of respective group I belong to. If not, it is better for me to go out without identity, for I will not harm anyone when I do wrong. It is also better, if people want to find out about who I am, because of what I do or say.

As Christians, we bear the name of 'Christ', which literally meant: we are little Christ. Have we been living like Christ, by way of what we speak, what we think and what we act? Do we tell people that we are Christians, and yet foul and swear words keep coming out of our mouths? or cheats in our business dealings? that all the people can see our hypocrisy? If we are doing so, it is better for us not to say that we are Christian! For not only will we pollute the name of Christianity, but we disgraced Christ whose Name we are using.

I am not saying that we should hide our identity, so that we can do whatever we want without smearing the religion or our God. No!

I am saying that we should prove our being - as a Christian, with our action - as a Christian. Let people know that we are Christians, from what we say, we think, we do in the society. Let people know that we care, and we love them, genuinely, not just in the act, but also in our heart.

If Christ really lives in us, it should not be that heart to be good and kind to people around us. If McDonald's staff is identified by her uniform, and the MOE staff by his name tag, by what should a Christian be identified? May I suggest, by our Act of Random Kindness (ARK).

Let us try to perform Acts of Random Kindness, wherever we go, wherever we are. Let us go the extra-mile with our ARK, trusting that with our ARK, we can get more people to come to know Him and be saved.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38414623.post-39391288975995144782010-10-18T11:49:00.000+08:002010-10-18T11:52:09.864+08:00Do you know that sometimes Preachers or Pastors feel envious toward worship team?Do you know that sometimes Preachers or Pastors feel envious toward worship team?

They feel envious, because a lot of times, the members of the church including church leaders, forget about the Sermon, almost immediately after the service, yet they remember the songs or the music during the service.

and why is that so?

Sermon, is a rather 'left-brain' activity, filled with information, which sometimes goes unaccompanied by good illustrations, colors, dynamycs (right brain stimuli), failed to get retained in the recipient's brain.

Worship Songs (note: the entire service and even outside service is Worship), on the other hand conveys a combination of right brain and left brain information. That is the word or the message (left brain), the tunes, rhythm, dynamycs (right brain) and together, they are easier to get retained in the brain. Because that is how the brain should function, using both the left brain and right brain together.

What should the Worship team does to make the entire worship service better?

The worship team should choose songs that will reinforce the message of the sermon. While our human brains may fail to retain all the information passed on by the preacher, the right song will help the congregation to remember the sermon. This will then help to transform the church, because the preached word will dwell in our hearts (read: brain), longer for us to consider, reflect and apply.

Sunday Service should not and must not be a competition between the Worship Team (Worship Ministry) and the Preacher (Word Ministry), it is ONE ministry to glorify God and both the preacher and the worship teams are the facilitators for the worship of God.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38414623.post-20631337750597298832010-10-08T09:38:00.004+08:002010-10-08T11:36:42.061+08:00The Passing of a 'Great' ManTwo things are certain in the world, that is death and taxes.

Though many youths denies or never experienced what is taxes, they do understand about death. And if death is understood universally by people of all age, what should we do to make our lives worth living for?

To some people, those with leadership straits in the character. They will want to be a legend, to be remembered for what they did on earth. When they reached a considerable age, they will want to 'really' do something worthwhile.

The sportsmen (and women) will try to give their best years, when their physics can them, to attain as many gold medals as possible.

The scientists will try to find as many breakthrough as possible, or rather, as significant a breakthrough as possible, that will benefit the mankind or the science.

Merchants or business man tries to accummulate wealth.

Military man tries to attain more power.

And so on...

Power, wealth, honor, fame and glory... are all these worth living for? Let us pause for a moment and rethink, in the midst of the accummulation of wealth, honor and power, have we become more of a blessing to others or rather, a curse?

The passing of a great man (or the spouse), if the person is of great importance, will bring many reports and headlines in the newspaper for many days. Even words spoken by one's grandchildren will be given a huge page in the newspaper - at the expense of other news.

But as the time passes, will anyone still remember such a person? No... I think even the full name of the deceased will be forgotten.

But the passing of one who touches many lives, not because of his or her money, power, or charisma, will be felt deeply. Even if his or her name will be forgotten, the fruit of the works done and the lives touched will last for a much longer period of time...

One such person is Jesus Christ, and our main tasks on earth is to imitate Him. We can never attain a likeness that is identical to Him, but we can always try to be better.

Today, I would like us to remember the passing of Dr. Vernon Grounds, a faithful writer for Our Daily Bread, who died on 12th September at the age of 96. Many would have read his articles, but perhaps few remember who wrote them, nevertheless, the lives touched by him and those who were touched through the people touched by his articles, are perhaps ... immeasurable.

Let us strive, not become a great person. Let us strive to become a person who touches lives and influences them to become a better person for the Lord. Let us strive, so that when the time come we should pass, we will be known not as a 'great' person, but as one who transforms lives.

http://www.denverseminary.edu/news/passing-of-dr-vernon-grounds/Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38414623.post-85940375961149023252010-09-16T08:19:00.003+08:002010-09-16T09:04:21.200+08:00Free Shuttle Services to Bankruptcy and Immorality - Anyone?I remembered a Taiwanese variety show many years back, featuring the famous host: Zhang Xiao Yan. In the show, it was repeatedly mentioned that Chinese are the people who likes to gamble. This may be a generalization, but it is safe to say that Chinese may have higher tendencies to fall to gambling. The profit of Singapore Pools tells that Singaporeans like to gamble.

As I read today's newspaper, the headline was about the decision of the CRA (Casino Regulatory Authority) to stop the IR's shuttle service. The decision was made, because the free shuttle service were to carry in people from 19 different locations in Singapore into the IRs, where there are many activities going on apart from gambling.

Personally, I applaud this decision and the arguments made by MCYS minister, for taking such measures. Yes, I am anti-gambling, for I know what damage can gambling cause to the family.

Yet, I find it amused, that people are being angry over such decision and write articles to condemn such a decision.

1. An article in yesterday's today says that 60% of the people who took the shuttle do not end up in the Casino or the slot machine.
2. A reader write in to say that the workers in the IRs are having difficulty to go to the IRs without the shuttle service.
3. Another reader write, that gambling is prevailing in Singapore anyway, why do we need to do such, 'knee-jerk' response?
4. Other arguments say, that the shuttle service is to ease and prevent traffic congestion to the IRs.

While all these arguments are true, there are counter arguments that is equally true:
1. How about 40% of the heartlanders who end up at the slot machines and Casino? They are not minority
2. Working in IRs is a matter of choice, if I stay in Pasir Ris and have to work in Tuas, do I complain about needing shuttle service?
3. Gambling in a Casino is radically different from betting in Singapore Pools outlet. It is much faster for people to lose money. The first two days when RWS opened in Sentosa they got 40 million SGD.
4. While traffic congestion is a real issue, do we need to cause harm to others for the sake of our own little conveniences?

Have we become so egoistic that we only think about our own benefit, and forget about other members of the public who are weak to restrain themselves from going to gamble? Or is it just because no one in your family suffered from the problem of gambling that you are being ignorant about the little incentives that 'free-ride' to Casino may bring?

In Singapore's drama "Housewives' holiday" there are interesting and truthful depiction of the offshore gambling in Batam. Here is the scenario:

1. The housewife will go to Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal, to buy a return ticket to a Batam jetty.
2. These tickets come with a 'TRANSFER' pass, in the form of a rather large laminated paper.
3. When they arrived at Harbour Bay in Batam, they never go through the check point.
4. They cross over to another ferry using the 'TRANSFER' pass and they will be shipped to the gambling ship.
5. The gambling ship provides free food, drink and entertainments in the form of gambling.
6. When they finished gambling, they will board the same Ferry back to Harbor Bay
7. From Harbor Bay, they board another Ferry back to Singapore
8. Since these housewives are holding Singapore Passport, they will be no Chop in their passport to indicate that they ever exited Singapore
9. Since they never went in to Batam Check point, they will be no Chop indicating that they ever arrive in Batam
10. Entire Gambling Trip was hidden to their family

To provide free shuttle service to the IRs, with the Casinos inside, I would say provide the conveniences for our local housewives who have shorter time to escape out of their kitchen and household duties. They can say that they have a short visit to the hospital and end up in the Casino for a few hours of 'excitement'.

And do we see the seriousness and how bad the situation might get? it is there in the newspaper today also. A lady, after losing all her money in the Casino, are touting other visitor for Sex service of 200 dollars. This case surfaced and is being reported. What about those go unreported?

The Shuttle service termination IS the way to go for the greater good of the public, especially the weak and poor ones. If the authority do not step in here, there will be more who end up in bankruptcy by the end of the year due to the Casino. And who would be able to estimate the number of people who might end up in prostitution because of this vice?

So, free Shuttle Services to Bankruptcy and Immorality - Anyone?Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38414623.post-3305998546583582562010-09-15T08:03:00.000+08:002010-09-15T08:48:18.615+08:00Public Transportation Condition in SingaporeSingapore is getting more and more crowded. That is an undeniable fact. With more people, and because naturally people do not just stay at home like in the movie Surrogates, they need to move around and travel.

Traffic congestion is therefore one of the major concerns that affects most if not all of the people in Singapore. People who can afford will try to secure own car, and face the problems of COE, ERP and availability of car park. People who cannot afford will need to settle with the public transportation, which one can hardly argue to get better over the time.

Complains are made by members of public, and the authority will have to 'react' or 'respond' to the complains. One wonders why nothing was being done unless someone complained. Should not the government be more proactive? but no, many of the times the rules and regulations are made to deter people from doing certain things and are not necessarily enforced, unless, some accidents happened to alert the authority (or public who complained).

When I traveled in the MRT with my parents who are above 60, the majority of the time I need to ask the people to give up their seats for my parents. There are occasionally some people who gave up their seats for the elderly, and I should say, sometimes the foreigners of different skin colors are doing better job then local Chinese Singaporean.

Perhaps people are just tired after a long day of work, or looking forward to a long day in the office, that they think they deserved their seats in the MRT? or maybe they are thinking, hey if you are so old why you come out during office hours? if you can come out that means you are strong! don't you think just because you got some grey hair, then you are entitled to a seat in the MRT.

The members of Singapore public definitely still lacks the basic courtesy. And I am thinking, if the media and the authority continue to think, or make the people think that they are okay, then things are not going to improve.

e.g.: it is no point showing how courteous people are when getting on a train during 'off-peak' hours, where people know, no matter how slow they enter the train, they will definitely get a seat. Try to put on some footage of people rushing in the train during peak hour, how they s the yellow line, crowds in front of the MRT door, and being proud that they are nearest to the door. Show how bad the situation is, show the ugly side of the people and show it in their face.

Tai Pei is a much crowded city than Singapore, with a much more complex train system, and yet the people are so organized and courteous when boarding the train and so self-prompted to give the priority seats to the elderly and those who needs it.

in the newspaper today, it was portrayed that a pregnant lady was given their seats eight out of eight occasions. The report proudly announced that it was conducted secretly and filmed using hidden camera. I have nothing against such report, except that I am not sure how was the setting of such experiments conducted?

1. Was it conducted during peak hour or off-peak hour?
2. Was it conducted at a busy station or quiet station?
3. Does the lady appears to have a super-visible tummy?

Try to conduct the experiment differently, using an old man who dies his hair (thus appear younger), holding a purple card for the elderly, but having a problem with his legs which is not visible to the people. Try to go to a crowded station during busy hour. Then see how you fare.

Also in the newspaper today, it was mentioned that a minister boarded a bus unannounced to check on the situation of the bus, after some measures were introduced to improve the situation. I applaud such initiative from the minister. I always say that the policy makers are those people who probably never affected by the policy they make. But such gestures are necessary and not other-worldly to do, considering emperors in China also did that in the history.

But again, we do not know when such visit happens. Is it during the 'comfortable' hour? the picture shows that the minister was standing while some other passengers were seating and nodding off. It is apparent that the newspaper is trying to convey a certain message which is up to each reader to make.

Finally, I need to say that such visits from the officials are necessary, and not as what the newspaper says, to check on the result of the new implementation/policy that the authorities just made. Such visits should happen, rather, before and during the day-to-day life, so that the officials can detect any anomaly or problem in the societyUnknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38414623.post-5724625583498645592010-09-10T09:58:00.002+08:002010-09-10T10:39:30.650+08:00The Core Business of the ChurchWhat is the core business of the Church? one may ask.

Different people may answer this question differently. As a Pastor, I need to really know and understand the core business of the church and be faithful to it, if I want to really glorify God.

When I first came in to the Church a few months ago, I was presented with a problem. Even if it was not put into the words, and not often mentioned by the leadership of the church, even as a mere visitor or observer, one cannot fail to notice the problem. That is: numbers.

The church has an average attendance of 50-60 people in its Sunday service, and about 15 during the monthly prayer meeting. To some reader from Europe, Japan or other post-Christian era countries, that number could be considered big, however for Singapore with its mega-churches, this number may seem to be more on the low side.

From the managerial point of view, therefore, some people may view this as a problem. And to every problem there should be a solution. And if the current set of people are not able to find a solution, therefore they need a problem solver. And that is why, the church hired me and my co-worker in the past few months to solve this 'problem'.

Based on this number issue, by focussing on the people, therefore there are a two-pronged approach to try to raise the number: To retain the existing member through proper pastoral care and counseling, and to increase the existing number through reaching out events. Those are the things on my head initially.

As I continue to serve, I began to see things differently.

What is the core business of the church again? to amass a good number? to worry that your church members may go out to join the mega-church? to do evangelism, so as to increase your number? Where is God in all these objectives?

No! The core business of the Church is not the number of the people. The core business, is to do the right thing, faithfully, regardless of the number of people. The core business is to glorify God and to preach His word to edify to the people. Yes, it involves the people, but they are NOT the main focus. Rather, God IS.

My mind turns back to the Great Revival (and should I add True Revival) centuries ago by Jonathan Edwards. The Revival was granted by God when we turn back to the true preaching of the Word of God. It is what God wants and then we are doing His Will and everything will progress accordingly.

Yes, I became more and more convinced that if we remain people-centered rather than God-centered, then we will be just people-pleaser instead of God. And as I do not have the capacity to please all sorts of different people, I choose the easier and higher calling, to please God and trust that He will provide all I need and He will bless the church accordingly.

What is the Core Business of the Church? It is the faithful and truthful preaching of His Word in a constant and consistent manner that will edify and transform the life of the Church.

The transformation from a small number to a big number can be manipulated by man
The transformation from a rotten life to a God-glorifying life can only be engineered by GodUnknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38414623.post-26154679939306495792010-08-30T10:58:00.007+08:002010-08-30T12:51:36.431+08:00Wedding Planner Beware: Florist to AvoidWedding, is supposed to be the most wonderful event in a person's life (apart from accepting Jesus). For man, our attention to the wedding may not be so particular or detail, for the woman, sometimes they wanted everything to be just right, in terms of colour, style, music and so on.

Me and my wife were honored to help out in one of our friends' wedding. She is my wife's best friend, and my wife is tasked to take care of the decoration and liasing with the florist. The bride-groom engaged a florist, who was approached by another couple having the wedding just one week before theirs.

The name of the Florist is 7colorgift.com, an online shop. The owner has a shop somewhere, but we contacted her through internet. Her name is Liu Qian or Lin Qing or Jessie Liu (you never know which is her real name). Her origin is from China and was graduated from Temasek Poly.

The Negotiation

Weeks before the wedding day, my wife has been communicating with both the bride and the florist about what they wanted to have. In the beginning, my wife took charge to identify what are the things we do not need and negotiated the price to go down by 200SGD. All was still well at this point of time.

The Requirements
Our friend wants to have gold/champagne color as the main theme for the floral decoration. This was communicated to the florist ways in the beginning.

Since this is a Christian wedding, we would like to have the center piece at the altar. This center piece should have a candle holder in the middle to hold the unity candle. And of course, it should be gold/champagne colour (eg. you can have other colours, but what stood out should be gold/champagne colour).

There will be flowers at the pews along the aisle, which should also be gold/yellow/champagne in colour.

There will be proper cover for the seat that the couples will sit on during the ceremony in the worship hall.

There will be another flower piece outside at the reception table, and it should be of the theme colour as well.

The Delivery of the Design
During this stage, there are communications between the bride, the florist and my wife. Pictures were sent and designs were discussed, all are noted by the florist which means that they will comply with our inputs.

The florist came up with a low center piece design for the altar, with a candle holder in the middle. My wife commented that the design is good, but because the altar is quite wide, can you add something to make it look wider? She noted the email, indicating that she is okay.

My wife requested for the florist to come up with the final design the latest one-week before the wedding, so that we can have a final review, and yet the florist only come up with the design on thursday, less than 2 days before the wedding.

D-Day - 1, Friday Night, Day for Decoration

My wife and her decoration team were there at the church to help out with the decoration as requested by the Florist.

They were shocked by what was being delivered:
1. The flowers decoration along the pews are pink and purple in colour
2. The center piece for the reception was pink in its entirety
3. The center piece for the altar was tall and fat and has no room for the unity candle at all, and it is also dominated with pink flowers with just a hint of yellow/gold
4. The seat cover that she provided was Pink

It is like, all the designs that she communicated to my wife, even the last minute design, was not in accordance with what she is doing.

My wife and the decor team commented on the spot, that it is not what they want. The florist's reply was simply "I think this colour is nice, I think this is good"

When being commented that we wanted a gold/champagne colour decoration, she said, we should not expect everything to be gold or champagne colour, and should allow some mixture. Of course we are aware of the flexibility to mix colours, but the main colour should be "gold/champagne", but what she delivered is purely pink/purple/red with just a tiny hint of gold/champagne.

She was totally stubborn to listen to any feedback that the team provided. She was so adamant that she did the right thing. When commented about the pink seat cover, she simply said "I don't have gold colour", and the team has to search for a replacement in the church and found a cream colour cover that is more in accordance to what the bride wants.

The team has to put aside the center-piece for the altar, because it is not according to what the bride wants, and it was plain ugly and not worth the 50 dollars that she paid for. The team improvised using Syphon cake's plastic cover, and punching holes through out, and sticking the plastic flowers all over the plastic cover and it looked even better than the paid center piece.

On the Wedding Day

After hearing my wife's words concerning the thing, I discussed with her, to see whether there is any lapsed on our part. I went through all the email correspondences and it is clear on black and white that we have communicated all that we wanted and the florist has acknowledged. I said I will talk to the florist myself.

After the wedding ceremony, the florist arrived to collect back all the flower pieces. When we are about the finish, we call her aside away from the wedding crowd to convey our feedback and displeasure.

To my amazement, she is a superbly unreasonable person. I asked her, what do you think about the decoration that you put up, which is not in accordance to what we wanted? She said, she thinks all is very good.

Below are the replay of our communication. It will not be correct word by word, but the facts will be correct.

I said, how can you say all is very good when you do not deliver according to what we want, concerning colour, design, theme and so on?

she said, no.. she thinks everything is good.

We: How come the colour is pink and not gold/champagne?

She: you cannot have all gold/champagne, it will be very dull, so I have to mix.

We: you can mix with other colours, but all that we can see now is a Pink-themed wedding and not gold/champagne as we wanted.

We: How about the center piece? you sent a design with a place for candle holder. We agree to it, we say that we want to have a wider design, and you acknowledge it. But now it is not at all the same with your design.

She: How can you be so unappreciative. I try to do my best with the budget you gave me, you never even say thankyou. You get what you paid for. If you are willing to pay, I can come up with any design, anything you want also can. (it is amazing that when we talk about the design and colours and theme over the mails, she never mentioned about the budget, and she noted everything)

We: Why are you talking about the budget now? we are beyond that. We are talking about the design that you delivered are not the same as the one you sent through the email.

She: you never mentioned that you MUST put the Candle in the middle of the flower piece. You can always put it behind. You never say cannot

We: How about the cover for the chair? how come you come up with the pink colour cover? we wanted a gold/champagne colour themed wedding right?

She: I don't have a gold colour. You all found a white/cream cover and you are happy with it, so it's okay already. I think pink colour is good. You all do not want it, it is up to you.

We: So, you don't think that you did anything wrong at all?

She: No, I think I have tried my best to work for you with your budget, and you never even say a word of thanks and say that all I did for you is wrong. Many people thanks me, your friends (she refers to the wedding previous week) thanks me, and you can only critize me.

We: you do not deliver according to what we want, how can we thank you? (we suspect some of the design are reused/recycled from last week's wedding, because that wedding's theme is pink/purple)

We: I am telling you, your attitude is very bad. You should not be in this service industry. You do not deliver according to what we want. You do not deliver according to what you promised. And worst, you do not want to listen to our feedback and keep on insisting on what you think is right, what you feel is good, with total disregard to what the bride wants for her wedding. You may give input but you never did so.

She: Mister, if you are not happy with my design, why you never try to call me. I have handphone. I have a shop to attend. I cannot be always replying your email (my wife's email). If you are not happy, you all should tell me, and this morning I can still come here to change before the wedding start. You only send me email.

We: I think the team has tried to feedback to you the situation last night but you refuse to listen and keep on arguing that your choice of colour is good according to what you think. How can you say that we never try to let you know?

We: we do not want to argue about this anymore. We will pay you the balance (You have to SIR), but I am telling you, you have a very bad attitude and because you do not feel sorry and acknowledge your mistake, we will be reporting to the CASE with all the pictures and all the emails about what is happening.

She: Sure, you can go ahead to do so. I have a FB account, you can come in and say anything you want. All the people like my design, I don't understand why you dont like my design and are so ungrateful of my hard work. You only get what you pay for.

We give her the money, walk in to the reception hall, and I totally lost my appetite despite of my hunger earlier on. I have never met such a bad service in Singapore before. It is apparent that she has no case, and she kept on jumping the argument from her opinion, to our budget, and to our methods of communication through email.

The FB Account

Later on, we tried to search for her company or FB account. her company is an 'unknown entity' in google. you cannot find it in the FB also. Finally using her email we managed to find her profile. 47 friends registered under her.

We found her photo album inside, titled :my flower shop. We went in to see the flowers she put there, and guess what are the main colours for the flowers there? pink.

It is apparent, she does not have the budget to buy the colour according to what we want. And yet she dares to accept the order. Worst of all, her attitude about feedback from customer. Refusal to listen to any feedback and countering all that we have to say about her wrongdoings.

and guess what, she posted on her wall, in mandarin, about her short encounter with us. She said, "the wedding today makes me so angry, after all my hardwork, they never appreciate it. A guy I never met before saying that I never deliver anything according to what they want. In fact, they just want to refuse to pay me after using my service. Such a lame excuse."

I am totally amazed by how such person can think of working in this industry if she refuse to listen to feedback.

I will proceed with my formal complain to CASE.

Conclusion:
avoid this florist at all cost. if you have friends who are planning for wedding, and is considering her, direct your friend to this posting for reference.

unless, if you are planning to have pink/red colour theme for the wedding, then you may approach her. FYI, the wedding on the previous Sunday was the wedding of my other friend. Although they requested for pink colour as the theme, the center piece that was given for them was plain ugly. Most of church's ladyfolk can do better.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38414623.post-77605068173565275752010-08-27T14:56:00.002+08:002010-08-27T15:30:18.397+08:00The Power of Image and ImaginationImagination, is a gift from God that we seldom use. Ever since the invention of alphabet, many visual images that human ever know are reduced to letters and words. In reading those words, depending on how developed is a person's right brain, he or she may understand the text differently.

In today's world, many adults are accustomed to the way things are, and refused to imagine the unthinkable, the unconventional things. Those who are willing to venture out of the box, will become the leader of their field. Those who dare not to imagine, they will certainly be mere followers.

Not only does imagination can help a person to be more creative in a career or research as mentioned above, imagination is beneficial to human beings in money other ways.

Tony Buzan, an expert who wrote many books on how to maximize the brain's power to memorize things, speed reading, mind mapping, explained that if we can combine the functions of both the left brain and right brain together, we can remember up to 10thousand items, if we want to try.

The key to remember or memorize? Imagination. A series of unrelated numbers or a string of illegible characters become so easy to remember, if we want to take another step - to imagine.

David Eckman, a Christian writer who specializes in the psycho-emotional health of a person said that most Christians are not performing well, as they should be, because they may not have a good mental image of the presence of Christ in their life.

In his book, Becoming Who God Intended, David vividly described how, by putting the image of Jesus in certain of our struggles with Sin, by remembering how vividly Jesus was nailed on the cross at the point when we are sinning, by imagining how God was saying to us that Jesus is there to died for this sin, the sin that we are committing at the moment, that we can truly feel and be as a Christian should be.

J.I. Packer in his book Knowing God, says that many do not really understand about the extend of the wrath of God, and therefore they do not feel they need to repent. Perhaps by giving the unbelievers some mental images (like how the Bible described hell), then they will be able to realize the consequences of their unbelief.

If you are still considering sin, and do not understand how detestable is our sin to such a holy being as God, try to imagine this. Imagine a creepy animal that you don't like. Maybe rat, mosquito or cockroach. You may not fear the insect or animal, but you feel disgusted when you see them. Especially if they are in your shirt or pants which you are wearing. Picture this.

Now, think from God's perspective. The sins that we are committing, are to God, as the cokroach is to us. It is that disgusting, and maybe 100 times more. How can God allow us, people who are full of cokroaches, to come near Him who is so perfect, so holy? If you do not want any cokroach in your shirt, do you think God wants you to sin?

May we be able to use our ability to imagine, to help us to become a better man, and a better follower of Christ.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38414623.post-19500445258158614772010-08-25T09:59:00.002+08:002010-08-25T11:42:41.574+08:00Manila Hostage Situation: Time to Evaluate the Function of Media?I made a new promise to my wife, to send her off to work even though it may be my off day (meaning I can stay in bed longer). The early morning sun, the green of the trees and the fresh air definitely worth my sacrifice of a few more hours of sleep.

I managed to grab a copy of the free Today too :)

The frontpage news is bout the hostage situation in Manila, in which the HongKong tourists were held by a gunmen, and a family of five lost 3 of its members. It is awfully sad, for a supposedly happy occasion to turn out to be such a tragedy.

and who is the culprit? It could be the gunman, the authority, or even the Media. Why Media? because the Media provided a Live coverage of the entire situation, which the gunman can monitor through a TV in the tourist bus.

In the report, an analyst mentioned that the Live Media coverage was the mistake number 1. Although others may point out that the authority was at fault for slow response or lacking of skills, I tend to agree with the analyst.

Indeed, in the world today, Conventional Media appears to be more of a bad influence rather than good to the society. They seek for higher readership, or viewership, by seeking to provide news that appeal to the audience. As a result, news about crime, scandal, sex, anything that sells became the 'only thing' that matters.

Some information about certain crime are described overly vivid in the coverage, which makes me wonder, is the intention of the reporter/writer/editor to provide more detailed information of a crime, or to inspire others to follow. Cases of rapes, incests and sex scandals are the constant highlights and front page news of certain Chinese News Paper, and one wonders why...

I believe it is irresponsible for Media, particularly in this case the one who provide the live coverage for the incident in Manila that costs 8 lives altogether. But 8 lives is comparatively small, compared to the vast number of public who absorbs whatever the media puts up and indirectly affected by them. Programmes and articles that are "hot" and "sellable" are mostly morally questionable and slowly but surely deteriorates the moral standard of the community.

Perhaps it is high time for the people playing major roles in the media world to stop and think, is money really the only important thing that matters? Is media solely a means to provide for the need to satisfy the insatiable hunger of the populace for more scandal, sex, and crime, or can the media serve as a means to educate the public and promote on what is right, true, good and beauty that are essential for the building up of a healthy society?

All things are permissible, but not all things are beneficial.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38414623.post-7323588586671095392010-08-25T09:51:00.002+08:002010-08-25T09:58:31.835+08:00ReNew my Interest to blog againIt is difficult to keep a habit, particularly a good one.

The past few months had been rather hectic, but after settling down to a regular job, somehow I just failed to gather enough determination to start writing again.

But again, after some nagging from my wife, I think blogging is perhaps one of the good habit that I should cultivate on. Rather than just blogging without purpose, I pray that I may be able to structure my blog into a kind of daily personal journey and reflection.

For that, I will try to blog something in the morning. It may be a reflection of my morning devotion time, or a response to the newspaper, or something that I encountered on my way to work.

In the evening, I will try to blog something that I have learned recently, maybe lessons from a book, a seminar or workshop, or even tv show. I hope that this blog will continue to be a blessing to me (to keep myself in check) and at the same time to bless others as well.

Life is full of ups and downs, failure and restoration... this blog is a true reflection of my real life, simple life...Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38414623.post-79761427712938886142010-06-10T10:45:00.001+08:002010-06-10T10:45:33.178+08:00CCLI available in Singapore!CCLI or Church Copyright Licensing International is the copyright body governing most of Christian songs being produced, used, sung in most churches around the world.

If it is not right to buy a pirated DVD, or copy an entire book for personal/public use, so it is the same for the usage of songs for the worship/services in the churches. You may say, that as long as you do not download the song and put it into your personal iPod or MP3 player, and it should be fine. No, it is not. For all the song that was song in the worship services, unless if we sing it from the song book that is provided for the congregation, in which the copyright and royalty has been duly paid to the songwriter/publisher, we need to pay for the license fee for printing of the song in our booklet, program sheet, or power point presentation or even just to sing it.

Few years back, when I was in charge of the worship department of Bukit Batok Presbyterian Church - Indonesian Congregation, there was a discussion about integrity and whether we did the right thing in singing contemporary songs in the worship and about copyright. As part of my duty, I found CCLI, but during that time, CCLI was not available outside US, Europe, Aussie and NZ. I wrote a personal letter to CCLI and checked with them about this issue, and they said that they can do nothing about it, as much as we could not do nothing about it.

Since April 2008, CCLI has officially allowed churches in Singapore to purchase CCLI license and it is only right, that the proper door is opened, that our churches in Singapore should proceed to register and pay for the license fee which will be channeled back to the songwriter and publisher. If the church choose not to pay the license fee, maybe out of financial reason, there are two options available:
1. For all the worship services and fellowships, no song should be used apart from those available in the hymnals owned by the church.
2. For all the worship services and fellowships, write a specific request to individual singer, songwriter, publisher for their permission to use the songs.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38414623.post-49190580010952997812010-05-20T22:35:00.001+08:002010-05-20T22:35:47.628+08:00Super Hectic Week with 3-in-1CelebrationUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38414623.post-72117690175925426482010-05-16T07:12:00.002+08:002010-05-16T07:31:35.117+08:00SBC Graduation DayFinally, the day has come.

it's all just like yesterday when I resigned from my work and started my study in SBC 3 years ago.

In this school, I made new friends from everywhere around the world, and they became my closest support group.

During this time, God opened my eyes, to see who are my real friends, and who are not.

It is also during this time, that God has broken my heart many times, through pain and sorrow, so that I can see things more clearly and I can depend on Him more wholeheartedly.

If there is one thing I learn through out these 3 years, it is this : Fear God and nothing else. Fearing people will not bring you anything, depending on people may only bring you disappointments, but fearing God is the way of life and the beginning of wisdom. He alone knows all my paths and my weaknesses and He alone cares for me more than I ever care for myself.

Today's graduation ceremony will be held at NTU-Nanyang Auditorium. Incidentally, this is also the very same place where I graduated nine years ago for my bachelor degree in NTU. Who would have expected that I were to have two graduation ceremony in the same place?

My family will be attending the ceremony with me. Friends will come and go. Family, they are not always there with you all the time, but one thing for sure is this, Family is your core support group, who are always there when you need them.

So, my friends... start your family now.. today :)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
